Links for 26 August 2008

A list of links that I came across over the past few weeks.

System Tools

Acronis TrueImage
I had to Windows system partition to a larger hard disk recently so I gave this software a try. It's fast, works well, and provides backup scheduling features. The only downside I can see so far is the format for backup images is proprietory, so you're forced to use the TrueImage software to restore a system.
Using Bonnie++ for filesystem performance benchmarking by Ben Martin (Linux.com)
This is a performance analysis tool for RAID hard-drive setups.

Sofware Development

So You Wanna Create Your Own x86 Operating System? by Patrick Mahoney (Linux Gazette)
An interesting article on starting from the ground up. Also contains good links for further reading.
A Quick Guide to GPLv3 (Gnu.org)
I recently published some software on freshrpms.net and I did a bit of research on the various licenses that are commonly used for open source projects. The GNU Public License is now in its third revision and although it has come in for criticism from some sections of the open-source community, it is still a very popular license. This page gives a good introduction to the changes from version two and links for further reading.
